Gilbert post office evacuated; substance found, 3 workers ill Patricia Biggs The Arizona Republic Apr. 29, 2003 11:25 AM

Authorities evacuated the Gilbert Post Office Tuesday morning after a yellow, crystallized substance was found inside a package container and several workers complained of difficulty breathing.

Several workers who were in the area were isolated and three were taken to a hospital, according to Capt. Robert Foster, spokesman for the Gilbert Fire Department.

"One of the workers found it (the substance), felt difficulty breathing and notified someone," Foster said.

About 15 homes in the immediate area were notified of the incident and asked to stay inside while hazardous-materials crews investigate, authorities said.

The postal service facility is located at 137 E. Elliot Road, near Val Vista Drive.
